Ready Set Adventure Classes

Lost Proofing Your Adventurers

Anyone can get lost, or have an emergency while adventuring outdoors in the wild or even their own neighborhood, but how do we teach kids to be lost proof without scaring the dickens out of them?  Games, observations, questions, and more games is our answer.  We teach adventurers the importance of communication, self-mapping, finding landmarks, and leaving a trail all in a way that highlights the fun while creating a set of rules that become a reflex rather than a scary checklist.  On top of that we look at a few things to carry and how to use them to answer the questions of what do we do if we get lost.  More importantly we learn other things to help us almost never have to answer that question. Modules in the lost proofing section include: (Click on any title below for more details.)

  1. Whistles, mirrors, and other signaling devices.

  2. Following and leaving a trail.

  3. How do we deal with weather, animals, and other scary things?

  4. Make the most of both expected and unexpected overnights in the woods.

  5. Treasure maps, brain-maps, and other way finding secrets?

  6. How to pack a real get BACK HOME bag for kids?

Each of the 6 modules is approximately 2 hours long and filled with real techniques taught in a fun family-oriented fashion.  One of our favorite things is when parents send us pictures of their adventurers teaching other new adventurers how to play these games in their own back yards.

Happy hiking and trail games

Is it a hike or just a really long walk?

Every time I teach a long class for kids, I ask this question.  Who here has ever gone on a hike and it just felt like a boring long walk?  I have been teaching kids in schools, at outdoor programs, in the scouts, and more for years.  I have never not had 100 percent of the adventurers raise their hands.  This series of classes is all about learning things to make hiking, or even walking the dog, more fun.
